This is a MUST DO when visiting Cartagena
This tour is located an hour outside Cartagena. We were a little down that there was a light drizzle out. We were given an opportunity to reschedule or go through with the tour, we chose to go through with it. No regrets! Rain suits, rain boots, and helmets were provided. Such lifesavers and a very thoughtful gesture for the tour. A small snack was provided before and after the tour. The staff and tour guides were excellent throughout the tour. They provided great customer service and made the tour worth every penny! Adjustments were made to fit the weather and no experience was left off the itinerary. From fruit cutting to bird feeding, 4 wheeling, the views and sunset, to horseback riding, and planting trees. This was definitely worth the experience! I hope Fundación Loros gets to see an expansion over the next few years. The place is a beauty!
Add depth to your tourism - volunteer day at Foundation Loros
Our day at the Nature Reserve of Foundation Loros was the highlight of our trip to Colombia. The staff was very friendly and informed and taught us a lot about animal rehabilitation and reintroduction into the wild. It was great to actively participate as well, feeding the birds and monkeys. I would highly recommend going to Foundation Loros to anyone visiting the Cartagena area.
Unique Adventure Outside of Cartagena!
We had a wonderful experience at Fundacion Loros! Overall the experience was incredible, it was adventurous, fun, educational, and really teaches you the importance of conversation while learning more about local Colombian culture.
The entire experience last around 4-5 hours. We were picked up in a private Taxi, drove for about an hour and arrived at the foundation where we were greeted by the staff and they guided us to a table outside to enjoy the delicious breakfast that they made for us. After that we put on some rain boots that the foundation provided, and went to go see and meet the birds and monkeys that they were helping rehabilitate. The team at the foundation drove us around in a four seater ATV. After seeing the animals in the ground level, we went horse back riding up a mountain.
The horseback riding experience is an adventure! It’s not like a typical tourist attraction where you go up a carved path, we went up and down a mountain for about 30-45minutes to reach the top. The views were stunning and it’s a once in a lifetime experience.
The foundation has guides in English and Spanish. They were very knowledgeable and kind.
If you’re in Cartagena and have a free day, I’d highly recommend this experience!
Wonderful Experience that is not to be missed!!
Donated a little time to the Fundación Loros, Parrot Rehabilitation center (they also assist other animals including Monkeys – have a few pics). They can release most back into the wild. Small effort on our part to help prepare food – showing one table here but there were many others. The last picture is a released parrot hanging out in a tree near the last aviary they stay in before being released. The pre-release cage is closer to the mountains and helps them and the wild birds to get to know one another so hopefully they are accepted into a community. Thank you
Fundacion Loros for the tremendous work you are doing, the incredible team you have, the generosity you show and the alliance you’ve built with local farmers so you ‘train’ the birds by not feeding them what the farmers grow (so when released the birds don’t eat their crops!) We loved the education we received! This is a must do tour!!
Truly a Sanctuary for rescued wildlife
Viator arranged a taxi for our transport to the Loros Wildlife Sanctuary. While the ride was long, you experienced the city and countryside on the way. The ride was well worth it. The work the Sanctuary does to rescue and rehabilitate birds and monkeys is amazing. Their goal is to release them back to their natural habitat, if possible. We heard the horror stories of some of these beautiful animals. To see them interacting in this safe environment was heartwarming. I am now following the Loros Sanctuary on Facebook. I highly recommend this tour when you visit Cartegena.
