The Deer Omar Met Face to Face

By Omar Enrique Verdugo Cabeza, Cuidador de las aves·Reviewed by Alejandro Rigatuso

This morning, as Omar Enrique Berdugo Cabeza made his way toward the Fundación Loros, the trail offered him one of those surprises the forest rarely gives: a white-tailed deer standing no more than five meters away, looking straight at him. For a moment, the man and the animal held perfectly still — before Omar reached for his phone and began to film. The deer didn't linger. It bolted into the vegetation of the sector known as Los Guardianes, and it was in that instant of flight that Omar managed to capture what defines the species most: the white flash of the tail — that luminous signal the Odocoileus virginianus carries like a banner when it vanishes into the undergrowth. The animal pressed deeper into the forest until the eye could no longer follow. Los Guardianes, that quiet corner of the reserve, is slowly building its own record of wild life. Omar had already reported a sighting of a juvenile iguana in that very same spot. It seems the sector has something to say — and Omar is one of those who knows how to listen.
